Jayakanthan, born in 1934, is known for his original thinking and thought-provoking ideas. A prolific writer, he has two autobiographies, two biographies, many novels and novellas, anthologies of short stories and essays to his credit. He was awarded the Sahitya Akademi Award in 1972 and the Jnanpith Award in 2002. His acquaintance with a relative associated with the Communist Party of India, introduced him to socialist ideology early in life. His broad canvas often has characters drawn from the lower echelons of life, brought to life by his unique treatment.
