The kolam is an inseparable part of life in India. In small towns and villages, the day breaks over narrow streets where the kolams of each house make an unbroken carpet of intricate lines, dots and whorls. On festival days these patterns become more elaborate.
Babuji, wife of renowned Tamil writer Kalki Krishnamurthi, was an innovative kolam artist. In this book, Gowri Ramnarayan presents a selection of her grandmother's designs and an introduction to Babuji herself. Her kolams show us that life, with all its ups and downs, has space and time and scope for spontaneity, creativity and wholehearted enjoyment.
