Oxygen Books launches "Madras: Tracing the Growth of the City since 1639" by K R A Narasiah

Oxygen Books, an imprint of New Horizon Media, launched K R A Narasiah’s Madras: Tracing the Growth of the City Since 1639 on 30 June 2008. The launch was done in collaboration with the Madras Book Club.

The launch began with a welcome address by the noted journalist Mr Randor Guy. The address was followed by Mr Badri Seshadri, Managing Director of New Horizon Media introducing the Oxygen Books imprint. He also spoke about the other imprints of NHM.

The guest of honour Mr S R Madhu—a well known journalist who has been associated with The Times, SPAN Magazine and the Bay of Bengal project among his other notable works—appreciated the book and called it a trust worthy reference guide of the Chennai city.

Ms Sushila Ravindranath, a noted journalist and Resident Editor of Deccan chronicle, received the first copy of the book from Mr S R Madhu. Ms Ravindranath thanked Mr Narasiah for writing a book on the city she grew up in.

K R A Narasiah—the author of Madras—is a qualified marine engineer and has authored more than 100 short stories in Tamil. They have been published in three volumes, of which two of them have won State Government and other awards. His book on sea trade, and the history of Madras in Tamil, have both won Tamil Nadu state awards. He spoke about his experiences while writing the book and also read an excerpt from Ananda Ranga Pillai’s diary. He thanked the publisher and the other guests for all the support and help he received to make his book a reality.

Crossword Book Awards 2007 - Indian Writing books shortlisted

Two tiles—Ashokamitran’s Star-Crossed translated by V Ramnarayan and Era Murukan’s The Ghosts of Arasur translated by Janaki Venkataraman—from the Indian Writing imprint have been short listed for the Crossword Book Awards 2007.

Crossword Book Awards recognises and rewards the best of Indian writing and takes such works to wider audiences. The awards are classified into three different categories:

1. Best Work in English Fiction

2. Best work in Indian Language Fiction Translation

3. Best Work in English Non-Fiction

Indian Writing, an imprint of New Horizon Media was started in May 2007 and has so far brought out twenty three titles. Twenty titles are in translation from Tamil to English and three novels in English by first time authors. These titles have been well received in the literary circles.

It is indeed an honour and encouragement to have been short listed in this Crossword Book Award 2007 among other well known authors, translators and publishers. The two titles from Indian Writing have been short listed under the Best work in Indian Language fiction Translation.

The results for this award will be announced on 3 July 2008 in a special programme arranged by the Crossword Bookstore in Mumbai.
